Memory Foam
Memory foam mattresses have been very popular for the past 10 years or so and now account for approximately 50% of mattress sales in the UK.
One of the first manufacturers to introduce the concept of memory foam in Europe was a Swedish Company called ‘Tempur’ in 1989.
Originally, memory foam products were very expensive but over the years many more manufacturers have produced memory foam mattresses and they are now relatively inexpensive.
Originally, standard foam mattresses were thought of as a cheep alternative to sprung interiors or latex. They were produced using an open-cell structure, which was readily available and used extensively in furniture. Memory foam has a closed-cell structure and is denser, making it much slower to recover after being compressed. Hence retaining body shape longer than standard foam.
Very few memory foam mattresses are memory foam throughout. Most are a combination of reflex foam, which acts as a base, with memory foam bonded on top.
The deeper the layer of memory foam, the more expensive the mattress will be.
Thickness of memory foam can be from as little as 2cm to more than 10cm
Memory foam is also used in sprung interior mattresses. Quality and price depends upon the type of spring used i.e. Cheep open coil to Miracoil, Posturepedic and Pocket-coil springs, all of which are classed as no-turn mattresses.
Many people have concerns about foam being warm and causing perspiration.
This can be true for cheep products but better manufacturers have addressed the problem by using ‘Tencel’or ‘Cyrus Airflow’ as a barrier or ‘Outlast’ fabric in the cover, all of which have natural cooling properties and outstanding moisture management.
Of course comfort is the main aim of memory foam and for back problems it is the ideal solution for correct spinal alignment.
Silentnight
Today, the ‘Silentnight’ name is known to millions as the brand leader of quality beds.
However not many people know that the company formed by Tom and Joan Clark as a small family business in 1946 was originally called ‘Clark’s Mattresses Ltd.’ based in Skipton North Yorkshire.
Due to increasing demand for their products they soon moved to a larger site in Barnoldswick and in 1951 changed the name to ‘Silentnight Ltd.’
By the 1980’s ‘Silentnight’ were the UK’s largest bed manufacturer and during this time launched a brand new spring system known as ‘The Ultimate Spring System’, an
affordable, anti-roll spring, better known as the hippo & duck spring due to
extensive T.V. advertising.
In the 1990’s this spring was modified and now has 3 comfort zones and known as the
'Miracoil® Spring System' and is used in both their ‘Miracoil 3’ and ‘Miracoil 7’ range of beds.
‘Silentnight’ now produce a full range of quality divan sets and mattresses at reasonable prices to suit everyone’s needs. From Kiddies ‘My First Beds’ to memory
foam, latex and combination ‘Pocket 2100’ sets, with a choice of firm or sprung-edge bases with drawer options.
The emphasis is now very much on comfort for a good night’s sleep and to this purpose ‘Silentnight’ use the services of Scientists and Physiotherapists to determine people’s needs and how to achieve them. All their products are thoroughly tested for
comfort and durability and all have a full guarantee and an extended warranty at no
extra charge.
Sealy
Sealy is one of the largest bed manufacturers in the world, operating in over
50 countries and selling beds at the rate of approximately one every three seconds.
Who would have thought in 1881that Daniel Heynes from Sealy, Texas could have built such an empire from the humble beginnings of making cotton filled mattresses for his friends and neighbours.
Today ‘Sealy uk’ (part of the ‘Silentnight’ group) manufactures high quality divan sets and mattresses covering a whole range of products.
Working with the American Orthopedic Advisory Board, Sealy are at the cutting edge of the “Science of Sleep”
The famous posturepedic range featuring a ‘Triple Offset’ unit offers anti-roll springs with correct back support, to alleviate back problems.
On their superior range a ‘Posture Tech’ spring is used, for improved anti-roll properties and superior back support to ensure a healthy night’s sleep.
Their current range of mattresses have been developed with zoned support, giving extra firmness or softness where required to give correct spinal alignment.
At the top of their range, Sealy now produce superb Pocket Sprung beds for superb support and pressure relief, many of which incorporate memory foam and latex for increased comfort.
Pocket Sprung Mattress
There are a variety of spring units available in mattress manufacture but the best spring units available are pocket sprung.
Traditional mass produced spring units consist of a series of coil springs in rows running across the width of the bed, held in place by helicoils and surrounded by a steel strip to support the borders. The tendency with this type of spring is for a certain amount of roll-together towards the heavier of the couple.
The pocket spring is different in that individual coil springs are placed in separate pockets of soft flexible material and are able to act independently to give better support, particularly in softer, more luxurious mattresses and prevent roll-together.
Also, more fillings of better quality are used than in cheaper mattresses.
Pocket mattresses are always hand-made. Some even have hand-stitched borders for better edge to edge support.
Prices vary considerably depending on a number of factors, such as the number of springs (from as little as 800 in a double, to over 3000 in traditional designs)
Weather the borders are hand stitched or not. The type & quantity of padding (wool, silk, memory foam, latex etc.)
The number of layers of padding and the outer cloth e.g. Damask also effect price.
Some manufacturers have tried to emulate the pocket spring i.e. miracoil, posture spring, flexiform etc. but none are as effective as the traditional pocket spring design.
Silentnight PocketZing/ Pocket Zing
It’s no longer necessary to trade comfort for the health and well-being benefits we are looking for, as Silentnight, the UK’s number one bed brand, is about to launch the next generation of luxury mattress – filled with pro-biotic microcapsules to help you feel full of Zing in the mornings!
The new pro-biotic treatment, called Purotex® works on the same principle as the pro-biotic yogurt drinks, by putting friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress.
As you sleep, your body pressure activates the friendly bacteria, which quickly multiply to outnumber and replace any harmful bacteria in the bed. The friendly bacteria reduce mould and moisture, keeping dust-mites at bay and reducing allergens for a drier, fresher, healthier bed.
In addition to keeping the bed fresh, Purotex® is 100% natural compared to traditional anti-bacterial treatments that rely on chemicals.
The friendly bacteria are just one feature of this exciting new range. Silentnight Pocket Zing™ is the first pocket spring sleep system to offer instant comfort and perfect support whatever your body shape and no matter how you like to sleep.
Pocket Zing™ has a completely unique advanced pocket spring technology. Unlike the traditional pocket sprung mattress, whose fabric pockets are linked together in a long chain, the new Pocket Zing™ springs are completely independent from their neighbours. This gives you truly personalised body contouring, eliminating any areas of pressure that might cause tossing and turning or aches and pains – the main causes of sleep disturbance.
The Pocket Zing™ springs are also cleverly zoned to support the different areas of your body in different ways. Firm springs are placed under the head and neck to provide extra support and a group of softer springs provide gentler support for your shoulders so they can sink comfortably into the mattress. More firm springs support your upper back and waist and medium-firm springs take care of your lower back and hips.
The result is that your spine stays beautifully level all night through, supported in its natural position so that it can recover from the rigours of the day.
Overheating is a common problem causing disturbed sleep and preventing the sleeper from reaping the benefits of a deep and healthy sleep. The new Pocket Zing beds feature a specially designed Breathable Airflow Border, allowing air to pass through the mattress, keeping the bed cool to help maintain a comfortable body temperature.
The Pocket Zing range features three new beds, each offering a slightly different level of comfort. Each mattress is combined with a stylish shallow divan base upholstered in one of a choice of three fabrics (cream woven twill, nutmeg luxury soft-touch fibre or soft patterned faux leather):
Classic Zing
This mattress uses unique Pocket Zing™ advanced pocket spring technology for truly independent and personalised body contouring and zoned support to deliver gentle cushioning for shoulders and firm support for the back. In addition, the Classic Zing mattress features both a Breathable Airflow Border and Purotex® cover keeping the sleeper cooler and the mattress naturally fresh and healthy.
Superior Zing
The comfort and support of the Pocket Zing™ spring system is complemented by memory foam for body moulding pressure relief. This mattress also features the Purotex(R) cover and a Breathable Airflow border to aid the sleeper into their perfect nights sleep.
Indulgent Zing
The advanced pocket spring technology is partnered with Innergetic® latex for instant comfort, body contouring and re-energising sleep. A sumptuous pillowtop with extra fillings provides the sleeper indulgent comfort.
Amanda Jones, Marketing Director of Silentnight, comments: “The new Pocket Zing™ range is a revolution in bed technology. Gone are the days when you have to compromise comfort for health and well-being benefits.
The combination of our advanced pocket spring technology with the added benefit of Purotex® technology means these beds offer total comfort, unrivalled back support and consumers can wake up with a ‘Fresh bed’ feeling every day. So now it is really possible to have a comfortable bed that is also good for you too!”
This range of technologically advanced beds has been developed by Silentnight, using the company’s in-depth knowledge of beds following over 60 years in the industry, and combining years of work with researchers and universities.
